Rain Delays at Richmond

Due to Tropical Storm Hanna, NASCAR Sprint Cup and Nationwide Series qualifying was cancelled at Richmond International Raceway on Friday afternoon. So as the NASCAR rules state, both series will start by car owner points. But as it ended up, Friday night’s NASCAR Nationwide Series race was rained out, and the weather for the Sprint Cup Series race was not looking promising either for Saturday night, so they decided to postpone both. For that situation, rules state that they must run the event on the next raceable day, that being Sunday, weather permitting. So NASCAR has postponed both races until Sunday afternoon, Sprint Cup Series at 1:00 pm, and the Nationwide Series at 6:30 pm. Make sure to tune in at the new times so that you don’t miss the last race in the Chase!

This weekend, the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series will be racing on the .750-mile D-shaped oval of Richmond International Raceway. As race number 26 of 36, this will be the last race before the Chase for the Sprint Cup begins. With point positions 6th through 12th still not guaranteed into the chase, there will definitely be a fight for those guys to stay in. But you also cannot forget that 13th and 14th position that still mathematically has a shot to make it in, as Bowyer (12th) is on 17 points ahead of David Ragan (13th). The Chevy Rock & Roll 400 will be a very important race for many drivers either trying to add to their bonus points, or get the last 10 possible before the Chase begins. Read More »

Tony Stewart is expected to name Darian Grubb as crew chief for the No. 14 Chevrolet that he will be driving for Stewart-Haas Racing next year.

Stewart mentioned this during the week on his SIRIUS radio show and was able to back that up while in Fontana, CA by saying that the announcement will come on Friday in Richmond.

Darian Grubb, who currently coordinates at-track engineering for Hendrick Motorsports, will now be named to the position of crew chief. During Chad Knaus’ four-race suspension to start the 2006 season, Grubb was a fill-in for Knaus as crew chief for Jimmie Johnson, who won the Daytona 500, finished second at Fontana, won at Las Vegas and finished sixth at Atlanta during that period. He doesn’t have a sponsor, he doesn’t have a number, he doesn’t know if he’ll be driving a third or fourth car, but what Reed Sorenson does know, is that he will be a part of Gillett Evernham Motorsports for 2009.

Sorenson’s announcement comes on the heels of some hard hits already suffered by the Ganassi organization, which shut the doors of the No. 40 team of rookie Dario Franchitti earlier this season because of sponsor issues and will lose also Texaco, the primary sponsor of Juan Pablo Montoya’s No. 41 car, after this season.
